Terahertz Waveguide Spectroscopy of Two - Dimensional Plasmons in GaAs

چکیده
The electrical characteristics of high-mobility, two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems, such as GaAs quantum wells, have been well-studied at low frequencies and in extreme conditions of high magnetic fields and ultralow temperatures. While highfrequency excitations of 2DEGs have been examined to some extent from microwave to terahertz (THz) frequencies, a fundamental understanding of the physical properties of 2DEGs in this range have by no means been mastered. To address this matter, this thesis focused on studying a fundamental, high-frequency collective excitation, known as the plasmon, to better understand plasmon damping and coupling mechanisms in GaAs quantum well 2DEGs. The experiments utilized THz waveguide spectroscopy to study the low-temperature behavior of 2D plasmons. Thesis Supervisor: Rajeev J. Ram Title: Professor of Electrical Engineering

We introduce an approach to implement full coherent control on nanometer length scales. It is based on spatiotemporal modulation of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) fields at the thick edge of a nanowedge. The SPP wavepackets propagating toward the sharp edge of this nanowedge are compressed and adiabatically concentrated at a nanofocus, forming an ultrashort pulse of local fields. The profi...

Coulomb-mediated interactions between intersubband excitations of electrons in GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum wells and longitudinal optical phonons are studied by two-dimensional spectroscopy in the terahertz frequency range. The multitude of diagonal and off-diagonal peaks in the 2D spectrum gives evidence of strong polaronic signatures in the nonlinear response. A quantitative theoretical analys...

We present the self-aligned fabrication of on-chip devices in which waveguides, incorporating integrated photoconductive switches, are combined with two-dimensional electron systems to allow probing of the ultrafast (terahertz frequency range) properties of confined semiconductor systems, both at cryogenic temperatures and in high magnetic fields. We demonstrate the direct injection of on-chip ...

Prism coupling and reflection spectroscopy are used to characterize bound modes within composite right/left handed terahertz metamaterial waveguides. The cavity antenna model is used to understand the polarization dependence of the radiative coupling to TM00 and TM01 waveguide modes. Furthermore, the cavity model along with transmission-line theory is used to derive a surface impedance model fo...
